Why Walk

Walking Can:

  • Help control body weight
  • Reduce the risk of coronary heart disease
  • Reduce the risk of stroke
  • Help control blood pressure
  • Reduce stress
  • Increase stamina

And much more . . . . .

What does a health walk involve?

Each 30 minute walk is led by a trained Walk Leader, one at the front and one at the back of the group, to cater for all speeds and to ensure no-one gets left behind. The Walk Leaders are first-aid trained and carry a first-aid kit. The walks comprise a 5 minute warm up, then 20 minutes at a brisk pace (brisk is considered to be when your heart rate is slightly raised, you feel a little warmer but can continue a conversation) followed by a 5 minute cool down. The trained leaders will advise you on walking pace for health benefits.

What should I wear

Clothing should be appropriate to weather conditions - but loose, comfortable clothing would be best.

Suitable footwear is very important. The shoe, boot or trainer should fit properly and be suitable for the terrain of the walk.

What should I bring with me?

  • If you have a medical condition that requires medication, e.g. diabetes, angina, asthma etc. please bring the medication with you.
  • Bring a small bottle of water and ensure that you take regular sips, especially in hot weather.
  • Make sure you have sun cream and a hat in warm weather - it is easy to get burned!
