Partnership funding helps Waterside refurbishment
30 July 2012
The £4.1m refurbishment of Castle Point’s Waterside Farm Leisure Centre is well underway and due for completion next year.
The project is being funded by Castle Point Borough Council with support from the Veolia Pitsea Marshes Trust.
“We are very grateful for Veolia’s contribution of £250,000 to this key project,” said Cllr Pam Challis, Leader of Castle Point Council.
“It will give the leisure centre, which is a vital and well-used resource, another 20 years use by current and future generations.”
Doug Benjafield, Chairman of the Veolia Pitsea Marshes Trust said: “Trustees were very happy to be able to support this strategic project which will benefit all of the residents of Castle Point. This project is another good example of how the Trust and the Council work in partnership.”
Contractor Morgan Sindall has been on site since May working on the main body of the centre, while many facilities continue to function alongside the major refurbishment.
New Horizons Fitness Suite is still available until March next year, when it will close for just four weeks for redecoration prior to the opening of the new centre.
Twenty nine classes have been moved to the Gymnasium which remains open until March, when it closes for six weeks, while the spinning room is still in use until February. Temporary toilet facilities and temporary lockers have been provided to support the function of the continuing activities.
The complete refurbishment of Waterside encompasses:
· Remodelling and refurbishing the reception, offices and the old physiotherapy room/shop
· Refurbishing of the dry side changing rooms, sauna, and first aid room
· Remodelling and refurbishing the wet side changing rooms
· Remodelling the Olympic Bar area to create a flexible space for activities/meetings
· Extending the New Horizons fitness suite into studio 3 – dependent on structural issues
· Replacing the high level windows to the pool hall
· Demolishing the rear changing rooms
· Refurbishing the astro turf (external grants currently being sought to fund this part of the project)
