Your Right to Vote
You can vote in elections only if your name appears in the register of electors. A new version of the register is published every year in December after every household has been sent a renewal form (this usually takes place between August and October). If you move house you can re-register at your new address at any time of the year without waiting for the annual renewal form. Registration forms are available from the Electoral Services Section, Council Offices, Kiln Road, Benfleet, SS7 1TF, on 01268 882200) or e-mail elections@castlepoint.gov.uk, or you can download one from the website or by downloading the

Sale of the Electoral Register
The Electoral Registration Officer has to produce two versions of the register - a full register and an edited register. The full register lists everyone who is entitled to vote. You can check it by calling at the Council offices. Only certain people and organisations can have copies of the full register and they can only use it for specified purposes. These include electoral purposes, the prevention and detection of crime and checking your identity when you apply for credit. The law says who can have a copy of the full register and what they can use it for. It is a criminal offence for them to pass it on to anyone else or to use it for any other purpose. The edited register leaves out the names and addresses of people who have asked for them to be excluded from that version of the register. The edited register can be bought by anyone who asks for a copy and they may use it for any purpose.
If you do not wish your name to be included in the edited version, please indicate this on the form. Please be assured however that your name will still appear on the full register and your right to vote will not be affected.
Declaration
Please ensure that the form is signed and then return to the Electoral Registration Officer as quickly as possible. Providing there are no objections, your name will be added to the Register and you will be notified as soon as this happens. If you have any queries about when your name will be added, please contact us on 01268 882200
Postal or proxy voting
You can apply for a postal vote at any time, whether permanently or for a specific election. You can also have a proxy vote (where someone votes on your behalf) if you are physically unable to vote in person at the time of the election. If you wish to apply for a postal vote or a proxy vote, please ring us on 01268 882200 or email us at elections@castlepoint.gov.uk. Approximately 3-4 weeks before an election, providing you are on the Electoral Register, we will send you a poll card informing you of the location of your polling station and the times of poll. Please note that we will not send you a poll card however if you have applied for a postal vote.
This Year's County Election will take place on Thursday 2nd May 2013. More information to follow.
