Council leaders back IER

Individual Elector Registration is a new system of registering to vote in local, national and European Elections.

ier promotion of leaders The rules changed in the summer so that everyone of voting age must register individually to be included on their council’s electoral register, bringing the biggest change to the electoral registration system in nearly 100 years.

In Castle Point, all residents across Canvey Island, Benfleet, Hadleigh and Thundersley will have received letters explaining the new, more secure, system of Individual Electoral Registration(IER)  which replaces the old Victorian system where the “head of household” registered everyone living in a property. Now, each individual is responsible for registering themselves.

Many residents have automatically been moved over to the new electoral register which was published on 1 December.

But some need to take action to join or remain on the register, so the leaders of the three political groups at Castle Point (Conservative, Canvey Island Independent and UKIP) have joined the campaign to urge residents to ensure they are registered and able to vote in next May’s local and general elections…and all subsequent elections.
