University to Visit Canvey Island on Wednesday 4 March 2015

Post Graduate Students from the University of Lincoln will be coming to Canvey Island on Wednesday 4 March 2015    to develop a Case Study into the unique history of the Island and the recovery methods which were undertaken to sustain the community following the 1953 Flood with a particular focus on the burial of the deceased and treatment of the bereaved families. The researchers wish to contrast present day methods with those used in 1953 and assess the long term effects upon those families who were afflicted by the tragedy.

This research will help to support and promote the civil protection duty placed on the Council under the Civil Contingencies Act 1994 to increase preparedness and warn and inform residents regarding the measures which exist to deal with any emergency taking place in the Borough and the findings of the research will be made available to the public .

The research will be led by Dr Lucy Easthope LLB MSc who is a Teaching Fellow in the Centre for Death and Society at the University of Bath and a Subject Matter Expert for the Cabinet Office and a senior lecturer at the University.

Councillors, Community Groups and local residents will be invited to participate in the research project.
