WOODLAND BURIAL

Woodland burials are a new concept within the Council’s Cemetery Service and designed to provide an alternative burial process that helps improve the environment by developing a new woodland.

This is achieved by planting a tree, shrub or flower bulbs on top of the grave. Monuments such as traditional headstones are not permitted, as the woodland will form a living memorial to the deceased. Shrubs and trees, specified species: Silver Birch, Cherry, Crab Apple, Mountain Ash are to be purchased and planted by the owner. The grave digger will show the location.

Whilst only single depth graves are available, provision can be made for adjacent burial space reservations at the time of the first interment so that partners of the deceased can be buried next to their loved ones. Exclusive rights of burial are not available. Bio-degradable coffins are encouraged. The grass area within the woodland will be cut at specific times each year to encourage wildflowers and promote a natural habitat. The woodland will be maintained to provide a neat appearance normally associated with cemeteries.
