Bulky Waste Collection

Due to Environment Agency guidance, we can no longer dispose of upholstered domestic seating items in landfill as these may contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). From now on these items must be collected separately and incinerated. Affected items include any upholstered seating or any item of soft furnished seating from any household or business that includes any part made of, or containing leather, synthetic leather, soft furnishing, fabric or foam. If you need to book a bulky waste collection that includes affected items (please refer to the checklist on this page), you will need to book separate collections; one for normal items and one for affected items. |

*POPs include pesticides such as dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), industrial chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls and terphenyls (PCBs/PCTs), and unintentional by-products of industrial processes, for example dioxins and furans.
Separate collection required. Collections take place on Tuesday's only.

Request a Collection
Bulky waste collection charges are as follows:
a. Items containing POP - Minimum charge of £44.55 for up to 3 items, each additional item is £6.88 (with a maximum of 10 items). More than 10 items by negotiation. Collections Tuesday only.
b. Any other bulky waste - Minimum charge of £44.55 for up to 3 items, each additional item is £6.88 (with a maximum of 10 items). More than 10 items by negotiation. Collections Monday only.

Not a bulky waste item?
Items that Castle Point Borough Council will not take via the Bulky Waste collection should either be taken to the Recycling Centre for Household Waste or please contact a local skip/house clearance provider. Only use registered waste carriers. You could be prosecuted and fined up to £5,000 if you don’t.

Too good to throw away!
Some items are just too good to not be reused by someone. Before contacting the council why not consider donating your items to an organisation where they can be reused by someone in need. It’s quick, easy and free to pass on your items and some items can even be collected for free. Everything from that sofa, bicycle or some electrical items.
Freegle
Freegle is an online platform that helps people give and get items for free in their local community! It’s a great way to support your local community and save items from being thrown away . The types of items you can give and get on Freegle ranges from furniture, clothing and children’s toys to soil, rubble or even pre-loved garden ornaments. You can pass almost anything on using Freegle!

Hopeworx
Hopeworx is a local Rayleigh based charity that collects donations of all furniture and electrical appliances free of charge with the aim of providing help to those who find themselves in crisis and in need of such furniture. All appliances are tested and where necessary repaired to make them fit for use. The warehouse at 33 Brook Road, Rayleigh SS6 7XJ is open to the general public to come along, browse and buy.

If you can't donate
We provide a bulky waste collection service for household items e.g. tables, chairs, beds etc., we do not collect fixtures or fittings. See the table below for a list of items that we can or cannot take.
