Hot Weather Warning


Public Health England (PHE) is urging people to take extra care in this spell of warm weather as the sunshine and high UV levels continue over the weekend which will see people at outdoor events across the east of England including the England versus Sweden World Cup football match.

While the hot weather will be welcomed by many, some people will find that the temperatures make them feel uncomfortable or affects their health. Older people, people in poor health and the very young are particularly at risk and may find it harder to adapt to the conditions.

Dr David Edwards, Consultant in Health Protection at PHE East, said:

“Much of the advice on beating the heat is common sense but it’s important to remember that high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for people who may be vulnerable such as older people, young children and those with serious illnesses so please check on those you know are at risk.

“There are a lot of events in the region this weekend from the Cambridge Race for Life to the Lord Mayor’s celebrations in Norwich and of course not forgetting the England World Cup match – have fun and enjoy the weather safely by drinking lots of cold fluids to keep hydrated, staying in the shade if possible, wearing a sun hat and applying sunscreen with a UVA protection.”

Tips for being sun safe:

  • Try to keep out of the sun between 11am to 3pm
  • Wear UV sunglasses, preferably wraparound, to reduce UV exposure to the eyes, walk in the shade, apply sunscreen of at least SPF15 with UVA protection, wear a wide brimmed hat and light, loose-fitting cotton clothes. This should minimise the risk of sunburn.
  • Drink lots of cool drinks and when travelling ensure you take water with you
  • Look out for others especially vulnerable groups such as older people, young children and babies and those with serious illnesses
  • Never leave anyone in a closed, parked vehicle, especially older people, infants, young children or animals
  • If medicines are sensitive to temperature it may be worth keeping them in the fridge
  • Children should not take part in vigorous physical activity on very hot days, such as when temperatures are above 30°C
  • Try to keep your bedroom and living space cool by closing the curtains on windows that face the sun and opening your windows at cooler times of the day and overnight when safe to do so. Turn off non-essential lights and electrical items as these generate heat.
