Important Changes to Domestic Furnishing Disposal

Following recent guidance from the Environment Agency, any upholstered domestic seating waste containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) cannot go to landfill and is required to be incinerated from 1st January 2023.

Please do not put this waste in your black sack or dispose of it by any other method.

Examples of waste that must now be disposed of in this way

  • sofas
  • sofa beds
  • armchairs
  • kitchen and dining room chairs
  • stools and foot stools
  • home office chairs
  • futons
  • bean bags
  • floor and sofa cushions

Mattresses, curtains, blinds and beds are not affected by this change.

Disposal
From the 1st January 2023, please take this waste to your nearest Household Recycling Centre where a skip will be provided. See more information on Household Recycling Centres.

Bulky waste collections will resume next week and we will be accepting new bulky waste bookings from Monday 9th January 2023.  Due to EA guidance, we can no longer collect and dispose of upholstered domestic seating items containing Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) i.e. upholstered seating or any item of soft furnished seating from any household or business that includes any part made of, or containing leather, synthetic leather, soft furnishing, fabric or foam at landfill with other bulky waste. From now on these items must be collected separately and incinerated.

Charges for the collection of bulky waste are as follows:

a. Upholstered domestic seating bulky waste - Minimum charge of £39 for up to 3 items, each additional item is £6 (with a maximum of 10 items).  More than 10 items by negotiation

b. Any other  bulky waste - Minimum charge of £39 for up to 3 items, each additional item is £6 (with a maximum of 10 items).  More than 10 items by negotiation
