New garden waste collection starts just in time for summer

From this spring residents in Castle Point can now dispose of their garden waste in a wheeled bin.

Over 3,600 people have already subscribed to the new system and leased a robust brown wheeled bin to hold all their garden waste at an annual cost of just £30. The bin will be emptied by Castle Point Council every week throughout the year.

Replacing compostable sacks with bins means residents no longer have to make trips to the leisure centres or libraries to buy sacks, and the new bins are easier to use and more suitable for thorny or twiggy garden materials.

Subscribing to the scheme couldn’t be easier. Residents can do it online by visiting www.castlepoint.gov.uk/gardenwaste and there’s no need to worry if you haven’t already signed up, you can do it at any time during the year.

For those residents who want to continue to use compostable sacks, new, improved sacks are available which are easier to use than the old ones and do not decompose so quickly once filled. They are available from libraries and leisure centres in the Borough at a cost of £5 for a roll of 20 sacks. Garden waste presented in black sacks will no longer be collected.

Food waste and Garden Waste are now collected on separate vehicles.

Councillor Ray Howard, Cabinet member for waste said: “The new bins are proving to be very popular with residents irrespective of whether their garden is large or small.

“We are delighted that so many people have signed up to the new green waste scheme and I am sure that as the season progresses even more residents will sign up.”
