Speaking at the opening today Councillor Jeffrey Stanley Deputy Leader of the Council said that

‘Increasing fitness and exercise is an important part of dealing with some of the health issues facing Castle Point residents .We hope that by opening the gym and retaining the Runnymede swimming pool we are contributing to a fitter and healthier lifestyle for residents’

‘The building of the Runnymede Leisure Centre is an important project for Castle  Point Council showcasing what can  be achieved when the public and private sector works together’.

Councillor Stanley thanked all those involved in making sure the project was delivered on time particularly those who gave up their Christmas break to ensure the new facility was ready in time.

Castle Point Borough Council has invested £1million in sporting facilities to expand Runnymede Pool in Kiln Road, Benfleet to provide state-of-the-art gym facilities including:

  • one of the UK’s first bespoke HD athletic free weights rigs for multi-use workouts alongside machines for cardio, strength and fitness exercise. Touch screens feature on equipment with the facility to access Netflix, Facebook and virtual running routes.
  • A dedicated spinning room will have top of the range bikes with coach by colour training and a wall-mounted screen capable of uploading virtual routes!
  • The new facility includes a studio that can be used for group sessions and will be available for hire by local dance and fitness groups.
  • A new café, together with remodelled toilets and changing facilities complete the refurbishment, along with maintenance and repair work to the popular pool.

The new facilities are part of Castle Point Council’s commitment to helping residents become healthier and fitter and a response to challenges facing all local councils following swingeing cuts in their government grants.
