New Solar Powered Toilet at Thorney Bay

Castle Point Borough Council will be installing a solar powered toilet unit at Thorney Bay ahead of the 2022 summer season. The cost of the unit and its installation is £108k and is being met by a combination of Contain Outbreak Management funding (COMF) from Central Government and a Covid Safe Tourism grant from Essex County Council. The unit will comprise of one standard WC and one DDA compliant WC and will have a fresh water supply and effluent tank.

This unit as well as providing improved toilet facilities until such time that the Coastal Communities funded pavilion and associated public toilets is built will in the longer term also ensure that additional toilet facilities are available during the busy summer period.

Councillor Andrew Sheldon, Leader of the Council said “I am very pleased that the Council applied for, and secured, the Covid Safe Tourism funding from Essex County Council. This funding has enabled us to provide improved toilet facilities at the Thorney Bay end of the seafront which will be operational for the forthcoming summer season. The unit will be supplied with running water so that basic hand washing and hygiene requirements can be adhered to at all times which is especially important in reducing the spread of the Covid 19 virus.”
