Pet homes must be licensed

Under the provisions of the Animal Boarding Establishments Act 1963 anyone providing accommodation for other peoples’ cats and dogs - even in private homes  - must have a licence.

Anyone currently operating or planning to start a business of home boarding within Castle Point must make an application for a licence.

Animal Welfare Officers carry out checks on the suitability of the owner and the premises before granting an annual licence. They also make follow up visits to ensure the terms of the licence are being complied with and the business is being properly run.

As the licensing authority Castle Point Council has powers to fine any animal boarding businesses operating without a valid licence.
