Castle Point Borough Council is encouraging residents and visitors to take part in a national consultation launched by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), which includes Canvey Island as one of 13 proposed new bathing water sites across the country.

The consultation follows sustained campaigning by the Council and local partners to secure official bathing water status for Canvey’s seafront, a move that would bring regular water quality monitoring during the bathing season and strengthen protection of the coastline.

Cllr Michael Fuller, Portfolio Holder for Environment said: “We are delighted to see Canvey Island included in Defra’s list of proposed bathing water sites. The Council, alongside our partners has campaigned hard for this recognition because we know how important our seafront is to residents, families and visitors. Achieving bathing water status would be a major step forward in ensuring water quality is regularly monitored and in protecting our coastline for future generations.

“We strongly encourage everyone who enjoys Canvey’s beach to support this next stage by taking part in the consultation.”
The consultation asks for public feedback on how the site is used including swimming, paddling, water sports and other leisure activities to help inform Defra’s final decision."
