Canvey Lake Water Quality Report: June 2026

Summary

An independent assessment of Canvey Lake has found that Canvey Lake is experiencing poor water quality and ongoing blue-green algae growth. The report identified a build-up of nutrients and organic material within the lake, which is affecting its overall health and creating the conditions for algae blooms to thrive.

Blue-green algae can pose risks to wildlife, pets and people who come into contact with affected water. As a result, visitors are advised to follow any warning signage around the lake.

The report concludes that the main issues affecting the water quality are linked to long-term sediment build-up and poor water circulation, which can reduce water quality and encourage algae growth.

Next Steps

The report recommends a number of measures to help improve the condition of the lake, including:

  • continued water quality monitoring
  • treatments to improve water quality and reduce algae growth
  • measures to reduce erosion and sediment entering the lake
  • habitat improvements, including floating eco-islands
  • longer-term plans to remove built-up sediment from the lake bed

Canvey Lake Water Quality Report: July 2026

Summary

The latest independent water quality monitoring report shows that Canvey Lake continues to face significant water quality challenges, with blue-green algae remaining present.

The report found that poor water quality is continuing to be affected by a combination of factors, including nutrient build-up, organic matter within the lake and limited water circulation. Blue-green algae remains the dominant algae species present within the lake.

The survey also noted a large population of wildfowl around the lake, which may be contributing to nutrient levels and affecting water quality.

Next steps

Specialist advisers have recommended continuing the current treatment programme and introducing additional measures to improve conditions over time. These include:

  • ongoing monitoring and testing
  • continuing algae and water quality treatments
  • exploring options to improve aeration and water circulation
  • measures to reduce erosion around the lake
  • encouraging reduced feeding of wildfowl
  • longer-term plans to remove accumulated sediment from the lake bed
