Castle Point Borough Council has appointed Videre to install a major upgrade to the Borough’s CCTV network, with work due to begin early November.

The £1 million project is being funded through the Essex Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s Safer Streets Fund. It will help prevent and detect crime and antisocial behaviour, while also providing greater reassurance to residents, visitors and businesses.

The investment will see new CCTV cameras installed at carefully selected locations. Chosen using police crime and anti-social behaviour data, as well as specialist CCTV advice and feedback from a local member’s panel. This approach ensures the new system is targeted at areas where it can have the greatest positive impact on community safety.

Once installed, the cameras will be monitored live 24/7 from the Southend CCTV Control Room, operated by Southend-on-Sea City Council, which provides CCTV monitoring services for partner organisations across the region.

The installation will be delivered in phases, with the project currently scheduled for completion in late February 2027.

Cllr Russell Savage, Portfolio Holder for People & Community, Castle Point Borough Council said: “We are delighted to have appointed Videre to deliver this investment in Castle Point’s CCTV network. This is an important step forward in our commitment to creating a safer, more welcoming space for everyone who lives, works and visits our Borough.

The new cameras have been selected to target areas where they can make the biggest difference in our community. We are pleased to see this major project moving forward”

Roger Hirst, Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex said: “There is clear evidence that increased CCTV monitoring can help improve community safety. This £1 million investment will strengthen Castle Point’s CCTV network, act as a deterrent, alert police officers to incidents and provide footage that can be used to bring preparators of anti-social behaviour and crime to justice.

“By working with Castle Point Borough Council, Essex Police and Southend City Council, it has been possible to focus this investment where it will make the biggest difference. Strong partnership working is vital – it is the best way to focus resources on bringing down anti-social behaviour and crime.

“The appointment of a contractor is an important step forward. Thank you to everyone who has helped bring it to this stage. I look forward to seeing the new cameras in place, helping to make the borough safer for residents, business owners and visitors.”

John Hatton, Operations Manager for Videre said “We very pleased to be working with Castle Point Borough Council to deliver this important project. We look forward to working closely with the Council and its partners to install a modern, effective CCTV network that will support local safety and reassure the Borough.”
