Seven councillors from Castle Point Borough Council are set to take part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out, a nationwide campaign running throughout March that raises vital funds and awareness for veterans facing homelessness.

The initiative, organised by the Royal British Veterans Enterprise (RBVE), challenges participants to spend a night outdoors to highlight the reality some former servicemen and women experience.

The RBVE notes that one night in the cold can help spark important conversations about the challenges veterans face, while raising crucial funds that support emergency accommodation, employment programmes and tailored welfare support.

The councillors will be spending the night in tents, close to the Council offices at Kiln Road.  To mark the occasion, the offices will be lit up in red, white and blue.

Cllr Rob Lillis, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Housing said: “We’re proud to be taking part in The Great Tommy Sleep Out. Spending one night outside is a small gesture but it helps shine a light on the reality many veterans face every single day. We hope our participation encourages others to support the campaign and stand with those who have served our country.”
