Council progressing funded plan and actions at Canvey Lake
Castle Point Borough Council is progressing a programme of actions moving into this summer as well as long-term improvements at Canvey Lake, following its decision to take back the management of the site.
The improvements are to ensure the Lake remains protected as an important environmental and community asset, with the Council committing dedicated funding to support its management and improvement.
The Council recognises that residents care deeply about the condition of the Lake and that concerns have been raised, including about water quality, wildlife and the impact of the recent warmer weather.
Work is already underway, with actions for this summer in progress and major improvements planned.
• Water quality improvement works, beginning this summer to improve the conditions for biodiversity and the ecological recovery of the watercourse environment.
• Dredging of the lake, planned for winter 2026, following technical assessment, design and procurement processes which are already underway.
This planned approach ensures works are carried out at the right time of year to maximise effectiveness and minimise impact on wildlife.
Water samples were taken from the site last week for testing and the Council continues to work with relevant agencies and follow environmental guidance in relation to water quality and algae. Monitoring and appropriate responses will continue throughout the summer period.
By taking on long-term stewardship, the Council is now able to:
• Commit sustained funding and resources
• Deliver immediate interventions while progressing larger-scale improvements
• Work with environmental specialists and partners
• Put in place a structured, long-term management plan
This programme reflects a shift to active management of the Lake ensuring both short-term issues and underlying causes are addressed.
Cllr Michael Fuller, Cabinet Member for Environment, said: “We know how important Canvey Lake is to residents and understand the concerns that have been raised, particularly during recent warm weather.
“That is exactly why we have taken on its long-term stewardship — so we can put in place a properly funded and deliverable plan. Improvements are already underway, with further works starting this summer and major interventions planned for winter.”
Cllr Warren Gibson, Deputy Leader of Castle Point Borough Council, added: “We understand the significance of Canvey Lake to local residents and it remains one of our top priorities. This is not a quick fix but a long-term commitment to improving the Lake and protecting it for future generations.
“We will continue to provide updates as each phase of the programme is delivered.”
Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council said: “Canvey Lake is one of our most valued local assets and we are absolutely committed to securing its future. We have listened to the concerns raised by residents and have taken decisive action by bringing the Lake back under Borough Council management.
“This allows us to put in place a funded, long-term plan that addresses both the immediate challenges and the underlying issues affecting the Lake. While improvements will take time and solutions are not simple, residents can be assured that this is a priority for the Council.”
