Refurbishment to begin at Abbeyfield House
Refurbishment work is set to begin at Abbeyfield House as plans move forward to transform the currently vacant building into temporary accommodation for local families and individuals.
Following the appointment of contractor Indecon Building Limited, work will start on 3 August 2026 and is expected to be completed by February 2027. Ahead of the main refurbishment programme, the contractor will be on site from 20 July to prepare the site.
The first phase of the project will involve the erection of scaffolding and the removal and replacement of the existing roof covering. Once the roofing works are complete, internal refurbishment works will begin.
The development will create 19 self-contained units, including a mix of single and multi-room flats suitable for individuals and families. The accommodation is specifically designed to support homeless Castle Point residents who are currently placed outside the Borough, enabling them to return closer to their communities, families and support networks. The scheme will also include accessible accommodation suitable for residents with disabilities, including wheelchair-accessible homes, helping to meet a range of local housing needs.
The Council is clear that the site will not operate as a traditional hostel or homeless shelter but as high-quality self-contained temporary homes.
Cllr Rob Lillis, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing and Housing, said: "We are pleased that work is now scheduled to begin on site. The refurbishment of Abbeyfield House will bring a vacant building back into use and is an important step towards delivering much-needed temporary accommodation for local people."
Cllr Tom Gibson, Portfolio Holder for Special Projects and Assets, said: "The appointment of a contractor and the start of the refurbishment programme mark a significant milestone for Abbeyfield House. We remain committed to keeping residents informed as works progress over the coming months."
As work begins, residents can expect to see increased activity at Abbeyfield House, including the erection of scaffolding and contractor vehicles on site. Every effort will be made to keep disruption to a minimum and the Council will provide updates throughout the refurbishment programme to ensure the community remains informed of progress.
