Statement on Local Government Reform (LGR)

Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council said: "We have always been clear that Local Government Reorganisation was not something we asked for or supported in Castle Point. However, once the Government made clear its intention to pursue it, we felt it was vital that we were fully involved in the discussions so that we could help shape any future arrangements rather than simply have decisions imposed on us.
 
“This announcement creates further uncertainty for councils, staff and residents across Essex. A considerable amount of time, effort and public money has already been spent responding to the Government's requirements and working towards the deadlines that were set. We will be seeking assurances from Government that the public money spent in good faith progressing this work will be reimbursed.
 
 “The Government now needs to provide clarity on the way forward. Whatever conclusion is reached, councils need certainty so they can focus on planning for the future and delivering the best possible services for local communities."
