We recognise that many residents enjoy feeding the ducks, geese and other wildfowl at the lake and do so with the best intentions. However, as we continue to address ongoing water quality issues, we are asking visitors to stop feeding water birds.
Food placed into the lake, particularly bread and other leftovers, can quickly accumulate and decompose. This can contribute to poorer water quality and create conditions that encourage the growth of blue-green algae.
Wildfowl may eat food floating on the water that has become coated in algae, potentially affecting their health. Excess feeding can also attract large numbers of birds to one area, resulting in increased faeces entering the water and further impacting water quality.
We appreciate local concern about the health of the lake and its wildlife. Everyone has a role to play in helping improve conditions, and one of the simplest and most effective actions residents can take is to avoid feeding the birds at this time.
