The Council's Design Code acts as a practical tool to guide the physical form of new buildings, streets and public spaces. It sets clear expectations for planning applicants and provides a consistent basis for assessing the design quality of proposals. Decision makers, Developers, housebuilders and architects can use the Code to shape their submissions and prepare any required site-specific design codes, ensuring that proposals meet high design standards and reinforce local character.
It aligns with the National Model Design Code (MNDC) and the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) updates of 2024, ensuring developments reflect identity, heritage and best practices.
The Council agreed to adopt the Castle Point Design Code on 22 July 2026 as non-statutory material planning consideration, with effect from 1 August 2026.
The Residential Design Guidance (2012) Supplementary Planning Document will be revoked from 1 August 2026.
