Introduction

Castle Point Borough Council ("the Council") have designed a Council Housing Asbestos Safety Policy with the safety of our tenants at the core.  If maintained in good condition and not disturbed, asbestos is safe.

A safety first approach

The Council will maintain an up-to-date record of the location and condition of known or presumed asbestos (presuming that materials contain asbestos is the safest approach) and hold this information on the Asbestos Register.
The Council will undertake an assessment of the risk of any identified asbestos and record this assessment on the Asbestos Register.
The Council will use the risk assessment to decide how often the asbestos should be checked.  We will use the services of an expert to undertake a programme of reinspection surveys and that the outcome of these is recorded on the Asbestos Register.

What about tenants?

When you move into your home, you will be told if there is any asbestos in your home, it’s condition and we will also let you know where it is.
Before we ask any contractor to do any work in your home we will let them know if there is any asbestos and where it is, so they can make sure they take care not to disturb it.
If you notice any damage to the asbestos in your home or in the communal areas please notify us immediately by
E: Safetyfirst@CastlePoint.gov.uk

What about leaseholders?

Leaseholders are responsible for their own home as per the Lease Agreement. If the asbestos is in a communal area the Council is responsible for maintaining the asbestos in line with the lease.
If you notice any damage to the asbestos in the communal areas please notify us immediately by
