In an emergency, always call 999

Fires are more likely to start at home than anywhere else. Most house fires are caused by things like:

  • Smoking
  • Leaving food in an oven or on a stove while doing something else
  • Using candles
  • Storing flammable material
  • Using faulty electrical appliances
  • Having too many things plugged into electrical sockets

It is important that you know how to reduce the chances of a fire starting in your home and what to do in the event of a fire to keep yourself and your family safe.

Page 6 of our Resident Safety Information Leaflet gives some additional tips on how to keep fire safe at home.

Test your smoke alarm

Smoke alarms save lives. Test yours once a month to make sure it is working.

Know your escape route

No matter where you live, you should know what to do in the event of a fire. Make sure to discuss your emergency plan with all members of your family including children.

It is important that you keep your escape routes clear at all times.

What do the Council do to help keep me safe?

Qualified external consultants carry out Fire Risk Assessments (FRA's) on our behalf. FRAs are needed where there are two or more homes with shared common access. They are not needed for individual homes without shared access.

See our Fire Safety Policy for more information.
