Dog Fouling

It is every dog's owner or person in charge of the dog's duty to clean up after their dog.

There are no excuses, fouling is unacceptable! Contact with canine excrement can lead to blindness due to an infection called ’Toxocara canis’.

Castle Point Borough Council has adopted a Borough-wide Public Spaces Protection Order meaning that any person who is witnessed not picking up after their dog could be fined up to a maximum of £1000.  Council Officers are authorised to serve Fixed Penalty Notices of £100 to offenders.

The Order applies to all land in the Borough which the public are entitled or permitted to have access to with or without payment.  This came into place on 1st October 2017.

Please ensure that you clean up after your dog. If you have dog waste bins within your dog walking route, then please use them. Alternatively clean up your dog waste and take it home with you to dispose of.

What do I do if I witness and incident or wish to report a repeated offender?

If you spot someone who is repeatedly not cleaning up after their dog, please record as much information as possible, including:

  • Date and time
  • Location
  • Person’s description
  • Dog’s description
  • Vehicle registration (if appropriate)
