Canvey Island’s £20 million Neighbourhoods Plan makes progress

Castle Point Borough Council is sharing an update on the Plan for Neighbourhoods, a major regeneration project that will bring £20 million of Government funding to Canvey Island over the next 10 years.
This long-term investment aims to improve local areas, support community priorities, and make Canvey Island an even better place to live. The funding will be spread out over three phases, starting in April 2026, and will focus on priorities like housing, transport, safety, health, education and high streets.
Since Canvey Island was selected for the programme in March 2024, a local Board has been set up to lead the work. The Board is currently chaired by Kate Willard, who also leads the Thames Estuary Growth Board.
In July, the Board held a workshop to look at the latest Government guidance, review local data and talk about what matters most to the community. A full engagement plan will be developed to make sure local people, businesses, and organisations have their say.
Castle Point Borough Council and the Board are now working on two key documents:
- A 10-year Regeneration Plan that sets out the big picture vision for Canvey Island
- A 4-year Investment Plan that details how the first round of funding will be spent
These plans must be submitted to the Government by 25 November 2025. Once approved, funding will begin in April 2026.
Cllr Dave Blackwell, Leader of Castle Point Borough Council, said: "This is a huge opportunity for Canvey Island. With £20 million of long-term investment, we’re laying the foundations for meaningful change, improving infrastructure, supporting local priorities and unlocking new potential across the community.”
Kate Willard OBE, Interim Chair of the Board said: "Canvey Island is a beautiful and special place and so deserves this funding award. The Board are going to work in partnership with local communities and organisations to make sure that it delivers brilliant results for the Island and for everyone who lives here. I am honoured to be part of this programme."
More information and updates will be shared on the Council’s website and social media channels as the Plan progresses.
