Canvey Lake update: Blue-green algae confirmed and new safety measures implemented

Castle Point Borough Council and Canvey Island Town Council are continuing their coordinated efforts to address environmental concerns at Canvey Lake following the confirmation of high levels of blue-green algae.
The Environment Agency has completed an analysis of water samples taken earlier this week and confirmed the presence of toxic blue-green algae. In response, Canvey Island Town Council has installed safety signage around the lake advising the public to avoid contact with the water and to keep dogs on leads.
To help improve water quality, Castle Point Borough Council has purchased a new aerator, which is scheduled for delivery on Friday (4 July) and which will be installed by Monday (7 July). The aerator will help to increase oxygen levels in the water.
Cllr Warren Gibson, Deputy Leader of Castle Point Borough Council said: "We’re taking swift and practical steps to protect Canvey Lake and the wildlife that depends on it. Our teams are working hard to mitigate the impact and keep residents informed. We ask everyone to follow the safety guidance provided and to support and respect employees undertaking work at the site.”
Canvey Lake is owned by Castle Point Borough Council and leased to Canvey Island Town Council under a 99-year agreement. Both councils work in partnership with the Environment Agency to preserve the lake as a local nature area and flood relief feature.
