Knightswick Shopping Centre set for modernisation following budget approval

The modernisation of Knightswick Shopping Centre has officially been given the green light after Cabinet Members approved an additional budget allocation of £816,700. Castle Point Borough Council agreed to the additional funding at a Cabinet Meeting on 18 June ensuring the ambitious refurbishment project can move forward in full.

Originally purchased by the Council in October 2019, Knightswick Shopping Centre serves as a key retail hub for Canvey Island, housing 28 ground-floor retail units within and around a covered mall. Recognising the Centre’s role in the regeneration of the town centre, the Council has committed to an extensive modernisation programme that will revitalise the shopping experience.

The planned improvements include upgraded lighting, flooring, ceilings, and infrastructure, creating a brighter, safer, and more inviting space. Additionally, the modernisation will introduce accessible entrance doors, high-level windows, and new entrance matting, alongside efficient lighting, Wi-Fi, and digital screens to improve the customer experience.

With a proposed start date of February 2026, this will allow sufficient time for the procurement of a suitable contractor following the busy Christmas season. The transformation will also include branding updates, CCTV installation, and improved accessibility. Furthermore, the Centre aims to strengthen its connection with the local community by providing activity zones.

Cllr Tom Gibson, Portfolio Holder for Special Projects & Assets said: "The refurbishment of Knightswick Shopping Centre marks a significant milestone in our continued investment in Canvey Island’s town centre. With these improvements we will create a vibrant space that supports local businesses and enriches the shopping experience for residents and visitors alike. This transformation will help attract new retailers and dining options ensuring that the centre remains a thriving hub for years to come."
