Over £1 million awarded to help Castle Point residents live independently

Castle Point Borough Council is delighted to announce that it has received £1,031,641 in Disabled Facilities Grant funding from the Department of Health and Social Care for 2025/26.

This funding will support eligible older and disabled residents by providing home adaptations, such as stair lifts, ramps, through floor lifts, specialist toilets, and graded floor showers. These changes enable people to live independently and safely in their homes, while also reducing the strain on local health and social care services.

Over the past year, the Council has supported around 90 people through this grant. The adaptations that are funded are truly life-changing - not only for the individuals receiving them, but also for their families and carers.

Eligible individuals may be homeowners or tenants of private residential properties and must intend to remain in their property for at least five years. Tenants will need permission from their landlords before any work takes place.

Applications for the grant begin with a call to Essex County Council’s Adult Social Care team at 0345 603 7630, who will arrange for an Occupational Therapist to assess the applicant’s needs. If adaptations are recommended, Castle Point Borough Council’s Environmental Health Service will manage the next steps, including a financial assessment.

Councillor Rob Lillis, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Housing said: "These grants make a real and lasting difference to our residents allowing people to live as securely and independently as possible in their own homes. If you think you could be eligible we would encourage you to find out more."
