Castle Point Plan Consultation

We’ve set out a bold, community-led strategy for sustainable growth across the Borough. The Castle Point Plan will set out where new development will be allocated, how much affordable housing will be built and more up to 2043.

Overnight street lighting to be reintroduced following public consultation

Castle Point Borough Council is pleased to announce that we will be reinstating overnight street lighting by the end of October 2025.

Councillor Stephen Mountford, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “The consultation results are clear.  Our residents want overnight lighting restored, and we will act on that feedback. This decision reflects our commitment to delivering on our election promises and consulting with our residents and ensuring that Castle Point remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone, both day and night.”

The recent public consultation saw a total of 3,887 residents submitting their views, with 83% in favour of keeping the lights on overnight.

The most frequently stated concerns were:

  • Crime prevention (81.5%)
  • Personal safety at night (78.7%)
  • Visibility during emergencies or deliveries (59.7%)

In 2014, ECC introduced part-night lighting across the county to reduce costs and energy consumption.

Castle Point Borough Council will now fund the lighting and instruct Essex County Council to leave the lights on all night throughout our borough by the end of October 2025.
