Overnight street lighting to return by the end of October following public consultation

Castle Point Borough Council is pleased to announce that overnight street lighting will be gradually reinstated across the Borough beginning from today(27 October) with all lights expected to be on by Friday (31 October).

Councillor Stephen Mountford, Cabinet Member for Resources, said: “We made a clear promise in our manifesto to consult with our residents on the issue of overnight street lighting and we’re proud to be delivering on that pledge. The results of our consultation were unequivocal: residents want overnight lighting back. From this week, that promise becomes reality, helping ensure Castle Point remains a safe and welcoming community around the clock.”

During the consultation, a total of 3,887 residents submitted their views, with 83% in favour of keeping the lights on overnight.

The most frequently cited concerns included:

  • Crime prevention (81.5%)
  • Personal safety at night (78.7%)
  • Visibility during emergencies or deliveries (59.7%)

This initiative is part of the Council’s ongoing policy to make the community safer, reinforcing its commitment to public safety and resident wellbeing.

Part-night lighting was originally introduced by Essex County Council in 2014 to reduce costs and energy consumption. Castle Point Borough Council will now fund the full overnight lighting and has instructed Essex County Council to leave the lights on throughout the night across the Borough.
