Plans to convert Abbeyfield House into temporary accommodation approved

Plans to convert the former Abbeyfield House sheltered accommodation into temporary accommodation have been approved by Castle Point Borough Council’s Development Management Committee.
The Council purchased the former Abbeyfield House in Chapel Lane, Hadleigh in January 2025. The scheme will redevelop the building into temporary housing for Castle Point residents who have been displaced due to a shortage of local accommodation. This includes families with children who are currently in bed and breakfast accommodation.
The Council will now begin the process of selecting a contractor to develop the property. Redevelopment work will begin around September 2025 with occupation expected in spring 2026.
Cllr Rob Lillis, Portfolio Holder for Health, Wellbeing and Housing said: "This is a significant step towards providing much-needed local support for residents facing housing difficulties. Many ordinary people and families from within our Borough are being displaced from the private rental sector due to rising rents or sale by their landlords. When that happens, the Council has a statutory duty to find them temporary accommodation. When that cannot be offered within the Borough, important social connections through schools, doctors and friend networks are broken. This scheme will ensure that more Castle Point residents can remain within their community, close to the support systems that matter most."
