Unified vision for Richmond Park and South Benfleet Playing Fields unveiled

A paper will be presented to Cabinet on 16 September, unveiling a bold and unified vision for the rejuvenation of Richmond Park and South Benfleet Playing Fields. The initiative seeks to transform the parks into vibrant, inclusive and well-connected green spaces.

The parks currently offer a range of facilities including a bowls green, croquet lawn, children’s playground, three grass football pitches and a pavilion now serving as a community hub. However, several areas, such as the basketball court and cricket pitch, require significant refurbishment to meet community needs.

Recognising the opportunity to modernise these spaces, members have already approved a series of improvement projects, including:

  • A sensory garden in partnership with Trust Links (Richmond Park)
  • A new amphitheatre for community events (Richmond Park)
  • Solar street lighting along key footpaths (both parks)
  • An inclusive and accessible playground (South Benfleet Playing Fields)
  • Rejuvenation of the existing playground (Richmond Park)

Beyond these upgrades, the report proposes to unify the parks under a single identity enhancing connectivity and visibility across the entire site. This would allow visitors entering from either end to easily discover all available amenities, as well as nearby destinations such as shops, schools and the railway station.

Councillor Michael Fuller, Castle Point Borough Council’s Portfolio Holder for the Environment said: “This is about more than just improving facilities - it’s about creating a welcoming environment that reflects the needs and aspirations of our residents.

“By linking the parks and investing in inclusive design, we’re building spaces that support play, relaxation, and community connection.”

As part of this vision, the Cabinet will decide whether to consult with local members and the Portfolio Holder for Environment on the possibility of renaming the parks under a single, unifying name.

Further updates will follow as the project progresses.
