Following a request from Canvey Island Town Council regarding an early surrender of the lease for Canvey Lake, Castle Point Borough Council has reviewed the request and is minded to support this proposal, subject to due diligence and formal execution of legal documents.

Before any agreement is finalised, Castle Point Borough Council will prepare a fully costed business plan that sets out a programme that not only restores Canvey Lake to a condition of sound ecological health and but also maintains the Lake in good condition through ongoing maintenance.

This business plan will undergo the appropriate corporate governance and legal processes to ensure it is robust and sustainable.

Cllr Warren Gibson, Deputy Leader of Castle Point Borough Council said: “Council officers are actively progressing the work needed and will bring it to members for a formal decision. In the meantime, Castle Point Borough Council continues to support Canvey Island Town Council and is working to facilitate a smooth transition.

“Canvey Lake is deeply valued by local residents, not only as a surface water attenuation facility (a structure to temporarily store excess rainwater to help prevent flooding) but as a space for leisure and wellbeing.  We’re committed to ensuring the Lake’s future reflects both its environmental importance and its importance to the local community.”
