Renting a Council Garage
The Council owns blocks of garages throughout the Borough and individual garages can be rented by either tenants of the Council or other individuals. All garages are rented on weekly tenancies.

Council garages are to be used for the storage of cars only. On the odd occasion people do ask to use a garage to store furniture for a short period of time. In these circumstances, you will be asked to complete a form which relinquishes the Council from liability due to damage caused by rain or dampness getting into the garage.
Council tenants will pay a rent of £13.00 a week and this is reviewed annually along with other rent increases.
When a garage is rented by a person other than a Council tenant, we are required to charge VAT on top of the rent. Therefore the weekly charge will be £15.60 a week. Housing Benefit will not be paid in respect of garage rent.
Offer of a Council garage
When the Council makes an offer of a garage, you will be required to come to the Council Offices to sign a Tenancy Agreement and to collect your keys. At the sign up two forms of ID will be required. This could be either a Passport or Birth Certificate, plus a utility bill which shows your name and address. The originals will be photocopied and returned to you.
You will also be required to pay four weeks rent in advance .
The Council requires one clear week's notice to terminate a garage. You can request a form to complete to give notice to terminate a garage tenancy.
The cost of any clearance required after the termination of the garage tenancy will be recharged to you.
