Opening of new Market on Canvey Island

Castle Point Borough Council is pleased to announce the opening of a new market for Canvey Town Centre on Thursday 17th September 2020.

The opening of the new market follows a significant effort to bring together the many aspects involved in developing a venture of this nature.  The market operator is Paylet Ltd, who also operates markets across London and the south east.

The opening also forms a key milestone in Castle Point Borough Council’s participation in the Interreg Go Trade Project which has provided funding in support of the project.  Being recognised as one of the official Go Trade markets consisting of a partnership of 16 local authorities and other organisations across the UK and France, also brings an associated recognition of quality.

Council Leader, Norman Smith, said: “The new market is a really positive initiative for Canvey Town Centre.  By creating a new experience for the town centre, we expect the market will attract visitors, helping it to thrive in what is generally a difficult time.”

The market will be held weekly every Thursday on the area outside the front of the Knightswick Centre.  A range of high-quality traders is expected that will include circa 10-15 general merchandise traders initially, many of which are local businesses and people.  The market aims to increase footfall to the area and thereby help support the long-term viability of the town centre and our existing local retailers. The market will grow organically and offer a wider range and more choice over the coming months.

Due to the on-going requirements for social distancing and the limitations on public gatherings due to Covid-19, the opening will be a ‘soft launch’.

Dany Blain, from Paylet said: “We are delighted to be opening the new Canvey Market, particularly at such a challenging time for shoppers and businesses. Canvey Market will give people more reasons to choose to use Canvey Town Centre more often.”
