See our Christmas closure information for our opening times and more over the festive period.

We’ve pulled together resources to help anyone who might be struggling as the weather turns colder – whether that’s because of the cost of living, energy prices or the weekly food shop. These pages will help you to make sure you’re accessing all the benefits you’re entitled to, as well as signpost some free resources to help with money management, avoiding debt, keeping warm, feeding your family and accessing support from the community.

Don’t forget that we also offer support schemes to apply for like Discretionary Housing Payments to help with rent or housing costs, or an Exceptional Hardship Payment to help residents suffering financial hardship or who have personal circumstances that impact their ability to pay their council tax.

Most of all – don’t forget you’re not alone. Our borough has great community spirit, and we know residents will look out for each other, and if the information you need isn’t here, you can ask our friendly team for help – call us on 01268 882200.

Pension Credit Week of Action from 12 to 16 October 2026

This October, The Pension Service are running Pension Credit Week of Action to challenge some of the common misconceptions that stop people claiming Pension Credit. Many people mistakenly believe that owning a home, having savings or receiving a private pension automatically makes them ineligible. It doesn’t.

As a result, many people of State Pension age who could be entitled to Pension Credit never make a claim.

Here are some of the myths we're tackling this year:

  • Own your home? You may still be eligible for Pension Credit. Home ownership is not taken into account when entitlement is calculated.
  • Have savings? You could still qualify if you have savings. The first £10,000 of savings is ignored. For every £500 of savings above £10,000, DWP assumes you have an extra £1 a week in income when calculating your Pension Credit entitlement.
  • Receive State Pension? Pension Credit is paid in addition to your State Pension and could provide extra financial support.
  • Think it happens automatically? Pension Credit is not paid automatically.

People need to check their eligibility and make a claim.
