Non Dependants

Non-dependants are adults who normally share your accommodation with you but are not dependent on you for financial support.

If you have someone living with you, who is not your partner or a dependant child we may make a deduction from your Housing Benefit and Local Council Tax Support (pension age only) based on their circumstances or income. You may hear us refer to this as a “non-dependant deduction”.

Examples of non-dependants could be:

  • Grown up children who still live with you
  • Other adult relatives who live with you
  • Adult friends who live with you

There is no non-dependant deduction if you or your partner:

  • is blind or have recently regained sight.
  • receive the care component of Disability Living Allowance.
  • receive Attendance Allowance.

There is currently no non-dependant deduction if the person living with you:

  • is under 18 years old.
  • is under 25 years old and is getting Income Support or income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance.
  • is under 25 years old and is still awaiting the assessment of their income-related Employment and Support Allowance entitlement (usually the first 13 weeks).
  • is in receipt of Pension Credit.
  • is a student or a youth trainee.
